Ounce of Weed Toronto Guide: The 3g-to-28g Flower Size Ladder, Decoded

Last checked: October 21, 2026

Every shelf in this city speaks two languages at once. The menu says grams. The person in line says "an O", "a half" or "a quarter". If you've ever searched ounce of weed toronto and come away more confused, this is the translation guide: what an ounce actually weighs, how the common flower sizes stack up, and where the number lives on a legal Canadian label.

Adults 19 and over only. This one is about weight, and only weight. Just the numbers.

How many grams in an ounce of weed? The official answer

Canada's Weights and Measures Act defines the ounce for us. Schedule II says a pound is 0.45359237 kilograms and an ounce is 1/16 of a pound. Run that math and one ounce works out to 28.349523125 grams.

Nobody weighs flower to nine decimal places, so menus round it to 28g. That's the honest answer to how many grams in an ounce of weed: a little over 28, sold as 28.

Ounce of weed Toronto: the size ladder

Here's how the common flower sizes relate to that 28g ounce. It's simple division, nothing more:

Size on the menuShare of a 28g ounceWhat people sometimes call it
3gthe small size"a three"
7gone quarter"a quarter"
14gone half"a half" or "half an O"
28gthe full ounce"an O" or "an ounce"

Two things to know about this ladder:

  • 3g is the small size. Full stop. It isn't a neat fraction of an ounce, and you don't need it to be. Read it as three grams of flower.
  • Not every menu uses every rung. Some menus skip a size or list in-between weights like 5g. The label is the final word on what's in a specific pack.

Where the weight actually lives: the label

Slang is fine at the counter. For the real number, read the pack. Federal Cannabis Regulations make every container of dried cannabis carry its net weight, in grams. Health Canada's packaging and labelling guide adds that the declared net weight has to fall within tolerance limits that Health Canada publishes. In other words, the number on the label isn't a rough guess.

A quick label-reading routine for flower:

  1. Find the net weight in grams. That's the size, whatever anyone calls it out loud.
  2. Find the packaging date. Every cannabis product label must show when it was packaged.
  3. Find the recommended storage conditions. They're required on the label too, so the producer tells you how to keep it.
  4. Check the class. The label names the class of cannabis. For flower, that's dried cannabis.

There's also a ceiling on the packaging itself. Under the regulations, a single immediate container can't hold more than the equivalent of 30 grams of dried cannabis. So a 28g pack fits under that ceiling.

Where 30 grams comes in

Short version, because the full equivalency math is its own article: Ontario lets adults carry up to 30 grams of dried cannabis (or the equivalent) in public. Ontario's own page describes that as "about one ounce". A 28g ounce sits just under the line. Two ounces doesn't. That's all you need for today.

Ounce of weed Toronto: slang vs label, side by side

Here's the core idea again, because it's the whole point:

  • "An O" → the label says 28g
  • "A half" → the label says 14g
  • "A quarter" → the label says 7g
  • "A three" → the label says 3g

If the slang and the label ever disagree, go with the label. It's the regulated line on the pack.

Quick answers

How many grams in an ounce of weed?

28.349523125 grams under Canada's Weights and Measures Act. Menus call it 28g.

Is 28g over the public possession limit?

No. Ontario's public limit is 30 grams of dried cannabis or the equivalent, and 28g is under that.

Why isn't the small size a fraction of an ounce?

It doesn't need to be. Flower sizes are sold in grams, and 3g is the small rung on the ladder.

Where do I find the exact weight?

On the label. Net weight in grams is required on every dried cannabis container.
